Sennelier Watercolors

Dick Blick is proud to present the complete palette of French watercolors from Sennelier of Paris. Sennelier was founded in 1887 in a shop across from the Louvre, just steps from the School of Beaux Arts. Gustave Sennelier mixed oil colors and watercolors for some of the most notable painters of the time including Cézanne, Picasso, Bonnard, Gauguin, Dali, Modigliani, Soutine, Degas, Monet, and Kandinsky, as well as for nearby students. Although Sennelier still grinds each pigment and its medium on a surface of granite, to obtain the proper consistency, the entire Sennelier line has been updated to reflect 21st century advances in pigment composition, resulting in the lightfastness desired by today's painters. These rich and intense colors are extremely fine and luminous, well worth their cost. Colors are available in two tube sizes — 10 ml (.33 oz) and 21 ml (.71 oz). Schmincke Horadam Aquarell Watercolors

Schmincke has been developing and manufacturing its Horadam line of watercolors since 1881, and the company is now owned by the fourth generation of the original family. Today the Horadam line includes 110 colors, 70 of them formulated with a single pigment. Each color has its own individually optimized formula. Schmincke has a reputation for using only the highest-quality natural gums, water-soluble resins, and pigments. For example, the company uses only Kordofan Gum Arabic from the southern Sahara region, and distinguishes between good and bad harvests or "vintages" of this natural resin as it selects its raw materials. Maimeri Blu Watercolors

Maimeri was founded in 1923 by noted Italian impressionist painter, Gianni Maimeri, who was searching to satisfy his own burning desire for artistic excellence in paint. The result of his passion is a line of highly concentrated, lightfast watercolors with performance unlike most of their mass-produced counterparts. Every color is made with the best binder available — a gum-arabic from Kordofan, in the Sudan region. The result is an almost completely clear and elastic medium, totally soluble in water, yielding the purest and most brilliant tones. Lascaux Aquacryl Colors

Lascaux Aquacryl colors offer a revolution in painting. Used at full strength, they handle like a very smooth fluid acrylic. Diluted they deliver watercolorlike washes and glazes. Aquacryl colors remain re-wettable when used in thick layers but are almost completely water resistant when applied in thin washes, resulting in cleaner glazes than with most traditional watercolors. Aquacryl colors are 100% lightfast and completely transparent. They dry to a velvety surface and can be applied to most absorbent surfaces. Yarka St. Petersburg Professional Watercolor Pans

In Russia, many great traditions in the fine arts date back to the time of the czars. In the 21st century, Yarka St. Petersburg Watercolor Pans are still manufactured using traditional materials and techniques, and with great care and craftsmanship. The color specialists who oversee Yarka production each have over 40 years of experience. All the pigments, including cobalt and cadmium pigments, are Russian-made in a factory that has been known for its quality for over a century. Unlike other watercolors which are made with the dry, compressed extrusion process, St. Petersburg Watercolors are liquid poured — a process preserving the integrity of each pigment and resulting in semi-moist pans that respond instantly to a wet brush.

Schmincke Horadam Gouache

Schmincke Horadam Gouache is more than just opaque watercolor. Since no white is added to Horadam Gouche to artifically boost its covering power, it can create crisp color blends like no other gouache. Of the 48 colors, all but 8 are based on a single pigment. Like Horadam Watercolors, colors thin with water and are easily rewetted if left to dry on the palette. Horadam Gouache is so finely ground, it can even be used for 0.15 mm airbrush work. Many other brands of gouache are "designer" gouaches, with an emphasis on accurate pre-mixed colors for use by the designer. By contrast, Horadam is a "fine artist" gouache, with an emphsis on providing the classic range of pigments as pure, single-pigment colors.

Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache

Renowned for its brilliance, opacity, and great tinting strength, Winsor &Newton Designer's Gouache is a finely ground, waterbased paint, well suited to illustration with pen, brush, or airbrush. A free printed color chart is available on request. Individual tubes are 14 ml (.47 oz). Black and white colors are also available in larger size 37 ml (1.25 oz) tubes. Gold and Silver are available in 30 ml (1 oz) jars. All Designer's Gouache colors are fully compatible with Winsor & Newton Artists' and Cotman watercolors. Colors can be mixed with Finity Artists' Acrylic and Galeria Flow Formula Acrylics, however care should be taken because some gouache colors can react adversely with acrylics. Combinations should be tested on the palette paper prior to use in a painting. For fine art painting, watercolor papers are recommended. For design and illustration, where work is intended for electronic scanning and reproduction, use illustration board or a Hot Press watercolor paper to get a flat finish that reproduces well.

Sennelier Artists Egg Tempera

This is the authentic formulation used since the Renaissance. Much of the religious panel painting done between the 12th and 15th century was done in this delicate and subtle medium, which is capable of detailed and complex effects. Sennelier Egg Tempera is famous as the medium used by Marc Chagall in many of his most spectacular works. Egg tempera is a water soluble and highly archival painting medium, wonderful for fine art painting, restoration, and icon painting. It's perfect as an underpainting for oil painters, or for artists seeking a highly pigmented, professional alternative to oil paints and solvents. Sennelier egg tempera has working qualities and a finish that is only found in authentic egg tempera made in the traditional manner. These delicate colors hold their brush strokes, and do not change when dry. Egg tempera can be worked with a brush or a palette knife (diluted with water) on non-greasy supports like acrylic primed canvas or paper. Impasto techniques are not recommended for egg tempera. Use varnish over egg tempera paintings for an oil painting like appearance. Sennelier recommends giving a finished egg tempera painting a coating of charcoal or pastel fixative before applying a final oil paint picture varnish.
