Primers, Gessos & Grounds
Golden Acrylic Gesso
Golden Gessos are ready-to-use liquid grounds formulated for the use of acrylics on any commonly used painting surface. They are flexible and can be applied in thin layers to conform to a variety of textured surfaces without cracking. Gesso provides a "tooth" to the support that promotes the adhesion of the paint system. Modify Golden Gesso by mixing it with a variety of mediums. Spray it, or apply it with brush, roller, or trowel. At least three layers of gesso are needed for oil painting over acrylic gesso.
Golden Absorbent Ground
This acrylic liquid surfacing medium dries to a high absorbency, porous, paper-like surface. Applied over gessoed canvas, it allows for raw canvas-like staining techniques and watermedia applications with acrylic or watercolor paint. Lightfast, permanent, and flexible.
Gamblin Oil Painting Ground
This is the top choice for a new generation of painters concerned about lead toxicity and convenience. Prepare a cotton or linen canvas that is stiffer than with an acrylic gesso, yet more flexible than a canvas prepared with a traditional oil primer. The binder in Gamblin Oil Painting Ground makes it more flexible and faster-drying than lead/linseed oil grounds, which must dry for six months. Gamblin Ground is ready for painting within a week. Because the percentage of pigments is so much higher than in acrylic gessos, painters only need to apply two coats of Gamblin Ground instead of the recommended four coats of an acrylic gesso.
Gamblin Rabbit Skin Glue
Rabbit skin glue is the traditional size for fabric support on panels. It seals porous fabric and isolates it from ground or oil paints. Stretching the canvas is easy, because the size shrinks as it dries. It is mixed with water to make a strong adhesive. However, atmospheric changes may result in movement, causing aged oil paintings to crack.
Golden Digital Grounds
Golden Digital Grounds turn just about any relatively flat surface into a printable surface. These mediums can be used on acrylic skins, metal, specialty papers, and more. Printed images come out clear and crisp, with great color. While almost any porous, flat surface can be run through an inkjet printer — including off-the-shelf papers made for printmaking and watercolor — the resulting images are frequently dull, faint, or blurry. This is caused by an overly absorbent substrate: there's no way to encapsulate or prevent the ink from spreading outward or penetrating too far into the surface. Conversely, on non-porous materials like acetate, plastic, and metal, inks readily pool up, run, and are easily smeared by both the printer mechanism and subsequent handling. Golden Digital Grounds help control how the ink resides on the surface (which affects color density), and protect inks from pollutants that can cause air fade. This clear ground with a gloss sheen is ideal for use on most absorbent surfaces, including watercolor and printmaking papers, Japanese rice paper and other specialty papers, canvas, various fabrics, wallpaper, leather, and unsealed wood veneer. After application, the underlying material is allowed to show through.
Golden Pastel Ground
Apply this translucent acrylic ground to paper, board, or any surface you wish. It provides a rough, "gritty" tooth, making it perfect for use with pastel, graphite, chalk or charcoal, and for the preparation of canvas and other supports for pastels. It can be blended with Golden Acrylic colors for colored grounds, or with Golden Fine or Coarse Pumice Gel to increase tooth.
Lascaux Pastel Ground
In the Swiss tradition of exacting quality, Lascaux Pastel Ground is manufactured to the uncompromising specifications and standards of European conservators. The medium is ground to an ultra smooth and uniform consistency to insure flawless adhesion and performance. Use it when preparing papers, boards, and other substrates for pastel work. Mix Lascaux Pastel Ground with Lascaux colors to create a variety of shades and tints. Mix with other Lascaux mediums to alter the texture or sheen of the ground, or to provide additional tooth. It is more flexible than Lascaux's modeling pastes, and can be blended with them for use on boards and other hard surfaces.
