Tip:
You don't have to purchase solvents to clean your brushes. You can use simple dish washing liquid. It's made to cut grease, and is less toxic. You should use solvents as a way to super thin your paints for an undercoating or watercolor look.

Another tip is that if you must use solvent please use environmentally friendly solvents. Odorless solvents can actually be worse for you than those with a smell. They still have fumes but you can tolerate them longer. Steer clear of those. We have not listed any of them here.

Lastly, make sure you do not dump solvents or oils down the sink or toilet. Soak up whatever you use with rags and then throw them out. The idea is that you don't want to get it into the ground water that you drink.

Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits

Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits

An excellent solvent for thinning Gamblin mediums, for general painting, and for studio and brush cleanup. It evaporates completely, leaving no residue, and the absence of the aromatic solvent component means painters can work with Gamsol five times longer than turpentine without adverse health effects.

Venetian Turpentine

Maimeri Venetian Turpentine

A golden solution, also called "fatty essence." It increases the shine and flexibility of paint.

Winsor & Newton English Distilled Turpentine

Winsor & Newton English Distilled Turpentine

All solvents vary in strength and in their capacity to "loosen up" the body of the color. The artists' grade solvent with the greatest power is English Distilled Turpentine, the only artists' grade solvent capable of easily dissolving Dammar resin. Turpentine makes a viscous mixture. It evaporates slowly, and is the most hazardous and strongest smelling solvent commonly used by artists.

Shiva Rectified Turpentine

Shiva Rectified Turpentine

Not the same as ordinary turpentine, Shiva Rectified Turpentine is double distilled and highly refined to properly reduce the consistency and improve the flow of artist's oil colors.
